A newer version can be found here.
This idea is simple: 3D print a structure to hold LEDs and another diffuser to soften the light. Both can be achieved with a simple common design. Here is a quick peek at the effect.
The provided STL files are what I used in my build but the provided scad files should allow everyone to build their own versions.
Unfortunately it seems Remix feature doesn't work. But I'd like to give credit to this original twisted polygon vase. The code helps me quickly develop mine.
To make this build, we need to print 3 parts:
inner pillar to hold LEDs
outer diffuser
a base to hold them
For my build:
a ws2812bb strip with 30 LED of 1m length
a Wemos D1 Mini with WLED firmware (can be downloaded here) following instructions here
The attached json file contains the pentagon shapes used in my build (should be loaded by OpenSCAD automatically) but one can improvise quite a bit (e.g. a shorter version with twisted inner pillar to hold LEDs, instead of using pentagon, try 4, 6, 7 and etc).
My design also comes with an option of using a screw to hook up the base and the rest. It might be a better option for a shorter lamp but doesn't work for a taller build. I had to hot glue the pieces, including D1 mini board.
More about the print. Here are how these parts are printed
inner pillar: StrongHero3D PETG (black)
diffuser: SunLu PETG (white, it looks semi-transparent though)
base: Geetech PLA (white)
More about LED strip: for a pentagon, each segment is about 20cm (cut the stock stripe into 5 separated pieces and solder wires to re-connect them back). And the provided inner pillar is 21cm to leave some room for the wires. The outer diffuser is 22cm tall to hide the board + pillar.
More about WLED setup: I changed the segment setup to include 5 pieces, each covering 6 LEDs and saved as preset 16 and marked to use it at boot. This gives better control.
