Getting fed up with my SmartThings hub, I decided to setup a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with Home Assistant to meet my home automation needs. Everything was great until we got a power flicker and my home hub reset. Thus began the search for a battery backup solution.
After researching the various battery backup options for the Raspberry Pi, I ultimately decided on going with the Geekworm UPS HAT V3 with a 3.7V 2800mAh 134049 Lipo Battery. Unfortunately, I couldn't locate any cases that were suitable for this application, so I decided to remix this awesome case.
Here are a few things to consider about the Geekworm USB HAT V3:
The polarity of the battery connector was reversed from that of the battery, so be sure to pay careful attention during assembly and swap the wires in the battery connector as required.
The most convenient mode of operation is to switch the AUTO UPS feature ON as this will keep the Pi powered in the event of a power loss. However, once AUTO UPS is ON, the Power On/Off button on the HAT is no longer operational and the Pi will stay on until the battery runs out.
I didn't bother with installing the Geekworm software on my Pi to enable the charge level indicator, but that could certainly be done if desired.
Charging is performed via the USB-C connector on the UPS HAT and the micro-USB connector on the Pi is covered to prevent confusion.
