The Styrofoam float in my GE GNSF35Z01 water softener decayed so badly after a number of years that the rubber stopper at the bottom fell out of the float. The rubber stopper would then slide down the guide and shut off the salt water. This prevented brine from ever reaching the softener - which resulted in hard water.
This part isn't supplied anymore and even the entire float is not available either. Since I just needed this item I designed a replacement float.
After printing, remove the rubber stopper from the old float and apply some dish detergent to help with getting the stopper in the printed part. Make sure it is set so it catches the internal ridge.
NOTE: I used PETG instead of PLA. PLA is porous and will take on water after a few days. PETG, as I've designed the part, has proven to be watertight.
