A canopy , or roof system , for Folgertech FT-5 3D Printer. My main purpose for the design was to get rid of the cable chains and have a place for the wire loom to drop in from around center. Also, was hoping to have an easier time fully enclosing the machine to run ABS. Then I created the arm brackets which turned into multi purpose spool holders. The spool holder brackets can be used in a number of ways. You can just drop in a 5/16 threaded rod across them. You can add 608 bearing to the threaded rod and press them into the cutouts. You can just hang the spool directly from the arms. In a few pics attached I used Ramons universal spool holders on the 5/16 threaded rod.
You do not need to print with any supports. You do need a few items though.
BOM
24 - 5mm x 10mm screws
24 - 5mm Twist N Lock nuts
4 - 9" long pieces of 2020 extrusion
2 - 5" long pieces of 2020 extrusion
2 - 6.875" long pieces of 2020 extrusion
Spool Rod
1- 16" long 5/16-18 threaded rod
2 - 5/16 - 18 nylock nuts
2 - 608 bearings (drop into the spool holders recess)
All my files come in rotated but I assure you nothing needs supports if you have decent cooling. The 2020 does fit relatively tight but I had them a bit too loose on the first go around so you may to press in the connections.
When you assemble, create the top rectangle first and fit the lid over the extrusions so you have the spacing exactly right. Then add the angled 2020 and attach to top of machine.
If you like the dlink camera mounts I use the one I designed is here for 2020 extrusion and works excellent for the FT-5 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2440785
7/19/17 - UPDATE
Added another set of brackets called Lid Parts 2. These have flanges built into them and a hole in each to be able to mount solid panels easily into the openings. These are untested. Once they are tested I will upload the flat panel sizes needed to enclose the entire top.
7/25/17 - UPDATE
I used my actual files to print a set of the flanged version and they were tight this time. Go ahead and scaled the parts by 102%. Went much smoother.
10/2/17 - I found these are the best spool holders for the canopy. I didnt design them but they work great. Can fit 5 spools on a canopy and they don't unwind on there own.
